GENAR — the shape of every lesson.

A consistent framework, developed by staff and students, that gives our teachers a shared language without flattening style.

GENAR — Goals, Engage, New learning, Apply, Review — was developed throughout 2019 by Sunbury College staff and students. It draws on best-practice research, the school’s context, and the needs of our students.

The framework is now embedded as the common language and shape of teaching at the College, while still allowing individual teachers to bring their own style to the classroom. In 2019, students built question sets to use at each stage of the GENAR cycle, ensuring student voice is part of the framework itself.

G

Goals. What are we learning, and why?

E

Engage. Connect to what students already know.

N

New learning. Introduce new concepts and skills.

A

Apply. Practice in context.

R

Review. What did we learn? Where to next?

Two posters, one shared language

The framework is summarised in two posters — one for teachers and one for students. The student poster includes the question sets developed by students themselves, so they know what to ask of themselves at each stage of a lesson.
