Languages — Japanese.
Compulsory to end of Year 8, optional through to VCE. Biennial sister-school exchange with Nagano High School.
Bilingual and plurilingual capability is the norm globally. At Sunbury we build students’ capacity to speak, write and understand — and just as importantly, their cultural understanding of the world beyond Australia.
Japanese is compulsory at Sunbury College from Year 7 to the end of Year 8, and remains an option from Year 9 through to VCE. Our curriculum follows the Victorian Curriculum across the Communicating and Understanding domains.
Year 7
Hiragana and basic socialising. Topical vocabulary covers animals, weather, colours, family and transport.
Year 8
Kanji and expanded vocabulary, plus investigation and reporting on Japanese identity, customs and traditions.
Beyond the classroom
Languages students enjoy a calendar of culture days, restaurant visits, speaking practice with native speakers, and cross-tutoring with a local primary school. Our long-standing sister-school relationship with Nagano High School in Japan brings biennial visits in both directions.
Japanese continues through to VCE.
